Abstract

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental condition characterized by difficulties in communication and social interaction, along with repetitive and restricted patterns of behavior. Its rising prevalence poses challenges for Dentistry, including sensory hypersensitivity, resistance to change, and increased risk of oral health problems. However, gaps remain in undergraduate training for this type of care. This cross-sectional study aimed to assess dental students’ knowledge and perceptions regarding the management of patients with ASD. Data were collected using structured questionnaires administered to students at the Universidade Franciscana (UFN) from the 5th to the 10th semesters. Statistical analysis employed the Chi-square test(p<0.05).
A total of 108 students were included. Results showed low practical experience (12.9%) and a mean self-perceived preparedness of 4.8/10. The main barriers identified were lack of hands-on experience (77%) and insufficient theoretical content (62%). Despite feelings of insecurity (58%) and anxiety (64%), empathy (49%) and professional satisfaction (43%) also stood out. Most participants (72%) recognized that basic preparedness to treat patients with ASD should be expected of all dentists. We conclude that significant gaps persist in dental education for managing individuals with ASD, underscoring the need for curricular reforms and the use of complementary educational materials—such as the educational booklet developed—to foster more inclusive and humanized practice.
