Psychological Issues Guiding HIV-Positive Mothers Regarding Non-Breastfeeding and Motherhood

OBJECTIVE: To describe the insecurity of nurses in managing HIV-positive pregnant women during childbirth in a maternity hospital in the Pernambuco hinterland. METHODOLOGY: This is a qualitative, exploratory, and descriptive study conducted with nurses working in a maternity hospital in the V GERES health region of Pernambuco. The elements provided through the questionnaires were described with a sociodemographic component and analyzed using the content analysis technique in three phases: 1) pre-analysis; 2) exploration of the material, categorization or coding; 3) treatment of results, inferences, and interpretation. RESULTS: A total of 12 nurses were interviewed. After analyzing the collected statements, two interconnected categories were identified: Impact on the HIV-positive mother due to non-breastfeeding from a professional perspective; Non-breastfeeding and its influence on the exercise of motherhood from a professional perspective. CONCLUSION: The experience of motherhood for HIV-positive women is accompanied by intense psychological issues, permeated by fears, stigmas, and the need to adapt to a rigid health protocol. Furthermore, it was observed in the discourses that the professionals understand how complex it becomes to experience motherhood as an HIV-positive patient, and how much this motherhood is fraught with various stigmas, which make the patients themselves afraid to seek services and to fully experience motherhood due to numerous restrictions, fears, and anxieties, with the psychological aspect being considerably affected.
